按照托马斯·汉德在接受CNN采访时给出来的说辞，在冲突爆发之后的头半天时间里，他都没法出门去找他的女儿，因为“哈马斯正挨家挨户地枪杀他的邻居”（with Hamas going from door to door and shooting his neighbours）。托马斯·汉德说他当时害怕极了，根本不敢出门，只能躲在家里祈祷以色列国防军赶快来，赶快来。因为只要以色列国防军来了，一切都会好起来的。“以色列军队很快就到了，只要再坚持一会儿就行了（the (Israeli) army are going to be here soon, just hold on a bit longer）。”
以色列国防军在基布兹里找到了100多名当地居民的遗体，艾米丽也是其中之一。对此，她的父亲感到非常欣慰（and for that, her father is grateful）。
托马斯·汉德说：“他们就跟我说：‘我们找到了艾米丽（We found Emily），她已经死了（and she’s dead）。然后我回答说：Yes!’并冲他们露出了微笑（And smiled）。因为我觉得，在所有可能性之中，这是我所能听到的最好的消息了（that was the ‘best news of the pos**ilities’）”
相比死亡，托马斯更担心艾米丽会被哈马斯给抓到加沙去（Hand feared she would be among those captured and taken to Gaza）。他说：“她要么是死了，要么就是被囚禁在加沙（She was either dead or in Gaza ）——如果你知道他们（指哈马斯）都对加沙人做了什么（ if you know anything about what they do to people in Gaza），你就理解我此刻的心情了，因为落在他们手里还不如死了（that is worse than death）。”
托马斯生怕艾米丽被俘之后可能会没得吃、没得喝（He feared she would be denied food or water），并且要在恐惧和孤独中忍受长达好几年的时间（and would be terrified and alone for “pos**le years”）。所以，托马斯·汉德坚定地认为：“死亡对艾米丽来说就是一种祝福（So death was a blessing），绝对的祝福（An absolute blessing）。”
